Art Show Inspired
by Museum Outings
article by Grace Wakefield
On Friday, June 13th,
2008 there was a reception from 6pm to 9pm at the
Eastern Shore Art League’s Gallery in the Blue Crow Antique
Mall at 32124 Lankford Highway, Keller, VA.
Art League members have created
paintings inspired by their two recent museum visits. The
first, in December 2007, was a visit to the National
Gallery of Art in Washington, DC to see the Edward Hopper
and the J.M.W.Turner Exhibitions as well as the works of
other artists. The second trip , in May 2008, was a tour of
the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond, VA. On both of
these trips Art League members were accompanied by students
from Eastern Shore high schools. These trips were made
possible, in part, by grants from the Virginia Commission
for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Art League member, Susan Levin,
worked to secure these grants and then she made the
arrangements for these exciting day trips to distant museums
. Thanks to Susan for her outstanding efforts in bringing
about these visits that were enjoyed by all participants.
This
art show was open to the
public on the evening of the reception and also during the
regular weekend hours of Saturday, June 14th and
Sunday, June 15th of the Blue Crow Antique Mall.
Visitors saw new paintings by
Art League members that specifically reflect the influence
of Edward Hopper’s paintings or the paintings seen in the
Richmond exhibit on “Landscapes from the Age of
Impressionism” at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
In addition to the above
special paintings that are on view for three days ,
visitors can see the regular collection of paintings by 30
artists that are on view daily at the ESAL Gallery in the
rear building of the Blue Crow Antique Mall. Art League
members hang new paintings every couple of months so as to
keep the collection new and interesting to visitors.
Miniature paintings by members are also on display . The
sale of the miniatures helps to fund the yearly ESAL
Student Art Show which exhibits the art of Eastern Shore
high school students.
