Bill specializes in portraits and says that "in
my portraits, the spirit or personality of the
individual is always pre-eminent. The pose or
expression that captures that unique character is
the foundation of all the work. It is central to
the likeness, certainly, but also directs the
entire design of the painting by determining the
colors, values and shapes I use to achieve unity
