Grace Wakefield spent the first fifteen years of
her life in India. She attended high school in
London, England. In 1948 she came to the United
States. Grace continued her education at Temple
University and the University of Pennsylvania. She
taught sociology at Beaver College and at George
Mason University.
In mid-life Grace started a mail order business
called Tom Thumb Workshops in which she marketed
crafting supplies. After 25 years she sold this
business to Mary Clements, a fellow "Art Leaguer".
It is now Tom Thumb Workshops and Market Street
Framers, a successful craft and framing business in
Onancock VA.
During retirement years Grace has been able to
devote more time to her painting. In the early 70's
Lois Staubs of Pocomoke, MD introduced Grace to
painting. Lois' joy in painting was infectious and
Grace began a love affair with paintbrushes, canvas
and the beautiful scenery of Assateague Island.
In the 90's Grace painted with John Hamburger in
his studio in Chincoteague and absorbed some of his
approaches to painting. John was an
inspiration.
Since then the friendship and stimulation she
has found in the Eastern Shore Art League has
motivated Grace to continue her painting. She has
begun to show her work at Art Shows.
Landscapes, seascapes, waterfalls, forests and
streams, mountains and marshes are the subjects
that she loves to paint.
Grace enjoys writing too. Her articles on
artists of the Eastern Shore are frequently to be
found in the Delmarva Quarterly magazine.
