I have had an art focus for the past
thirty-seven years starting with formal education
at Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC. At
Corcoran I was most influenced by William Woodward
who taught me the principles of classical painting
techniques, and Pietro Lazzari who instilled in me
a love of drawing. Two years later I enrolled in
the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in
Philadelphia. During my years at the PAFA, one of
the teachers who most influenced me was the
sculptor, Tony Greenwood. He talked about the
"magic of the medium of paint," and the possibility
of transcending its physical state. Among many
other influential teachers at PAFA there was Louis
Sloan, who was a terrific landscape painter, and
John McCoy, who expanded on the mystical
possibilities of painting. There was Morris
Blackburn who demonstrated the "sound of the
point", "Dragons' veins" and "accent passage",
Oliver Grimley showed me the importance of the
quality of line and texture and the feeling of
substance. Roswell Widener whose patience with cast
drawing was enlightening. Hobson Pitmans' critiques
were feared and cherished, his display of pomp and
cutting satire along with his knowledge of
classical painting was a theatrical enlightenment
in the history of art.
I have taught beginning painting, landscape
painting and figure drawing at the Art Institute
and Gallery in Salisbury, Maryland. In 2002, I
opened a studio and gallery in Onancock, and now my
new studio / gallery in Nassawaddox.
